The tree mass-produced Thai beers, Chang, Leo & Singha, are the most popular local lagers. When tourists as for a local beer, they will likely be offered one of these. Authentic Thai craft beers in Bangkok are a rare find.

That’s because Thai laws prohibit people from brewing and distributing their own beer.
Many bars sell foreign craft beers, but due to high import taxes, don’t expect these to be cheap.

Actually, are the local alcohol brewing laws so strict in Thailand that the local craft beer brewers export their local Thai ingredients across the borders to neighbouring Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, to produce their Thailand craft beer in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam instead, and then import it back into Thailand.

And crazy enough, some of the “Thailand Craft Beer/Bangkok craft beer” are these days made as far away as in Australia, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. Even the oldest Thai Craft beer, “Phuket”, is produced in Cambodia.

Nonetheless, an army of enthusiastic brewers in Thailand is pushing for changes in the brewing laws. At present, only a handful of microbreweries in Thailand are licensed to produce local craft beers.

But, there’s no quenching Bangkok’s thirst for craft beer. Here are some unique and tasty Thai craft beers to try:

Happy New Beer Pilsner: Old school flavours with a touch of tropical fruit. Brewed in Australia.

Full Moon Chalawan Pale Ale: A fine balance between sweetness and bitterness. Brewed in Australia.

Sandport Broken Sword Red Ale: Imperial red colour and distinctive taste and aroma from the roselle flower. Brewed in Taiwan.

Devanom Ippo Pale Ale: Well-balanced with woody notes of coffee and vanilla. Brewed in Cambodia.

Mahanakhon White Ale: Crisp and smooth, ideal for Bangkok’s humid and hot weather. Brewed in Australia
